Abigail Coggeshall Casey’s Gravestone

Thomas Goodale Casey’s grandmother, Abigail Coggeshall Casey (1737-1821), was commemorated with a slate stone common from the late eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries. Also often seen in this time period is the weeping willow and urn motif at the top of her rounded stone, and carved words that emphasize her family relationships rather than her personal characteristics. She came from a long line of Quakers who tended toward simplicity in design and her stone is signed by carver Franklin Cooley of Providence.
